As a depression counseling broward county facilitator, I often get interviewed by couples seeking a collaborative divorce who have been referred to me by collaboratively trained attorneys. These couples frequently ask, “What is important for us to know?” and “What questions should we be asking you?” Another common question is, “What sets you apart from another facilitator that is equally experienced?” These inquiries inspired me to write this article, aimed at helping couples understand what characteristics and competencies to look for in a facilitator and how to distinguish one facilitator from another.
One of the most important factors to consider is the rapport you feel with the facilitator. Similar to choosing a therapist, it’s essential that you feel comfortable with the person you’ll be working closely with. Divorce is deeply personal and often painful; you need someone who is easy to talk to, who listens without judgment, and who can create a safe space for both parties to express their thoughts and feelings.
